While adding steel, micro-synthetic, or macro-synthetic (a more recent development) fibers to concrete have been around for decades, the benefits of utilizing fiber to reinforce concrete span from enhanced toughness, mitigation of plastic shrinkage cracking, and a lighter weight compared to traditional steel rebar. Depending on if the project will allow, contractors might find fiber-reinforcement a cost-effective alternative to provide durability.
However, it can be a challenging to know how to mix the fibers in and how to figure out the amount to use (often by pounds per cubic yard of concrete). The process must be done with careful planning.
